The big recycle week is 2nd-8th June (Sat-Fri)

The blue boxes have led to such a big increase in recycling that the council also distributes blue bags to allow householders to recycle more.
There are over 50 different types of plastics commonly used. Seven of these are commonly used in the food and packaging industry. Recycling depends on markets for the recycled materials. Unfortunately the recycling market of the food packaging plastics such as yoghurt pots or meat trays is poor at the moment. Therefore it is not environmentally or economically viable to collect them for recycling.

The following items can be placed in your blue box / blue bag recycling receptacles:

Newspapers, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, phone books and yellow pages
All types of plastic bottles, those with a screw top or flip-top lid, including plastic milk bottles, drink bottles, shampoo bottles, bleach bottles, etc. - please wash all bottles thoroughly
All food and drink cans and tins - please rinse these out
Aerosols - please make sure they are fully discharged
Foil - please rinse
Cardboard, including cereal boxes, washing powder boxes and large cardboard packing boxes
Plastic carrier bags.

Interesting facts:

• On average, every person in the UK throws away his or her own body weight in rubbish every 7 weeks.
• Each UK household produces over 1 tonne of rubbish annually, amounting to about 31 million tonnes for the UK each year
• In less than 2 hours the UK produces enough waste to fill the Albert Hall
• The world's annual consumption of plastic materials has increased from around 5 million tonnes in the 1950s to nearly 100 million tonnes today.
• You can make 20 cans out of recycled material with the same amount of energy need to make a new one
• Any glass product can use up to 80% recycled material

August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days. August begins (astrologically) with the sun in the sign of Leo and ends in the sign of Virgo . Astronomically speaking, the sun begins in the constellation of Cancer and ends in the constellation of Leo .

This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin , because it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar , which started in March about 750 BC under Romulus . It became the eighth month either when January and February were added to the beginning of the year by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC or when those two months were moved from the end to the beginning of the year by the decemvirs about 450 BC ( Roman writers disagree). It was renamed in honour of Augustus in 8 BC because several of the most significant events in his rise to power, culminating in the fall of Alexandria , fell in this month. August originally had 29 days in the Roman Republican calendar, but two days were added to it by Julius Caesar beginning 45 BC giving it its modern total of 31 days. Augustus did not take a day from February when Sextilis was renamed in his honour. See Month lengths . August's flower is the gladiolus or poppy , and its birthstone is the peridot , sardonyx , or sapphire .

Strawberry Bliss

Get the party started with this luxurious cocktail. The recipe makes two (if it's only you and your loved one), but it's easy enough to make plenty for your friends.

Summer Berries Ice Cream Pudding

A delicious alternative to a traditional summer pudding that we're sure you're guests will love!

Serves: 4

You will need:

1 punnet strawberries
1 punnet raspberries
2 tablespoons blackberry cordial
4 tablespoons water
100g Demerara sugar
6 slices brioche, sponge cake or country bread
1 pint Häagen-Dazs Summer Berries & Cream ice cream

How to prepare

Set aside half a dozen each of raspberries and strawberries for decoration.
Put the remaining fruit (after washing, hulling and chopping the strawberries) in a small saucepan with the blackberry cordial, sugar and water. Bring to a simmer and stew very gently for 2 - 3 minutes before pressing through a sieve to make a rich dark fruit syrup.
Take a 1.5 litre pudding mould and line the bottom with a circle of greaseproof paper. Cut the brioche into triangles and arrange them, overlapping very slightly, so that they completely line the bowl. Brush thoroughly with the fruit syrup until completely saturated.
Fill the bowl with the slightly softened Häagen-Dazs Summerberries & Cream ice cream. Cover with more brioche and soak with the fruit syrup. Cover with a plate.
Place the bowl in the freezer with a small weight on top of the plate and leave overnight.
To serve, turn the pudding onto a plate and decorate with the remaining fruit.

A Red Red Rose - a poem by Robert Burns

O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile
