Evening Talks and Weekend Drop-In Sessions

The Thames Estuary Partnership (TEP) is a forum for local authorities, national agencies, industry, voluntary bodies and local communities to work together for the good of the Thames Estuary. The Partnership is a charity which co-ordinates projects and holds events and workshops to provide information and to gather feedback.  More detailed information can be found on the TEP website, www.thamesweb.com/tep.php

The threat of climate change and increased flood risk is an ever present feature of the Peninsular, yet many local people are not aware that plans are already being developed to help those responsible to adapt to these threats.

To try and solve this as well as to give you a voice, TEP is arranging a series of evening talks and weekend open days with the Environment Agency - in conjunction with local partners - to update communities and organisations across North Kent on the Environment Agency's Thames Estuary 2100 Project

The parish events are:  a Presentation in Allhallows Village Hall on Wednesday 13th August 2008, between 6-9pm; and in Allhallows Village Hall on Sunday 17th August 2008, between 10am-4pm, when a "drop-in session" will be held  For much more information including other event dates, please click here.

Height of Conifer Trees

From the 1st of June 2005, provided they have tried and exhausted all other avenues for resolving their hedge dispute, people are able to take their complaint about a neighbour's evergreen hedge to the Council. The role of the local authority is not to mediate or negotiate between the complainant and the hedge owner but to adjudicate on whether - in the words of the Act - the hedge is adversely affecting the complainant's reasonable enjoyment of their property. In doing so, the authority must take account of all relevant factors and must strike a balance between the competing interests of the complainant and hedge owner, as well as the interests of the wider community.

Involving the council should be a last resort if neighbours really can't agree a solution. The council can refuse to intervene if they think the complainant has not done everything they reasonably could to settle the  dispute.

The council will be only be able to look at complaints if they fit the following criteria:-

* The hedge is growing on land owned by somebody else.

* The hedge or the portion that is causing problems is made up of a line of two or more trees or shrubs.

* The hedge is mostly evergreen or semi-evergreen.

* The hedge is more than 2m tall.

* The hedge is capable of obstructing light or views.

More details about the high hedge legislation are available on the Communities and Local Government website www.communities.gov.uk/planningandbuilding/planning/treeshighhedges/

Alternatively you can contact Alan Brier, Senior Tree Officer if you would like any more information about these issues on telephone number 01634 333333 or Email: alan.brier@medway.gov.uk

Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau

The Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau is a voluntary organisation and registered charity, based in Chatham and acts as a recruiting agency for all voluntary, charitable, statutory and other non profit making organisations requiring voluntary assistance in the Chatham, Rochester, Strood and outlying areas such as Isle of Grain.

Hands also run direct services which include a Transport Scheme where volunteer drivers take elderly and less able clients to hospital appointments, GP surgeries and other clinics, Lunch Club for elderly residents of Lordswood & Walderslade, and a Befriending/Visiting Scheme for lonely and housebound elderly and less able people. We are particularly interested in recruiting volunteer drivers and
Volunteer Befrienders for the Befriending/Visiting Scheme. We would also like to let people know about our services.

So, HANDS are always recruiting volunteers either for our direct services or for other charitable organisations. Often the demand for volunteers is much greater than the number of available volunteers and we would like to ask you to consider helping us. Please contact us soon. Our address is 5A New Road Avenue, Chatham, Kent ME4 6BB telephone 01634 830371, e-mail: rochestervb@btconnect.com. Web site, click here.
